About the shot :
Freya and Saskia (both British Sailing Team) sail the 49er FX which is one of the most technical and complex sailboats competing in the Olympic Games.
In order to full fill their aim to win gold at the 2024 Olympic Games, training is key. In that regard professional sailing and professional sailing photography have lots in common.
Pushing limits and redefining photography is always the goal. This can only be achieved through experience, passion and risk taking. Every hour on the water for us photographers is considered as training, too. It’s all about knowing your equipment, improving your positioning and getting familiar the venues you find yourself working in.
For me personally, this unique look onto a 49fx crew is an example for a technically advanced and special photograph. The reason why I chose this particular one is due to that it combines risk of failure, the right choice of lens, trust in your equipment with the perfect choice of day time (sunset).
Nevertheless, you as a photographer also need some luck in all your commissions. A shot like this, where everything is motion blurred apart from the crews face simply cannot exits without luck. The chances to have the exact same moving direction and speed between the crew and yourself in 1/25th second is obviously quite small.
